Workforce prioritisation guidance: Families

What it is

Policing affects more than just officers and staff - it touches their families too. From disrupted routines and emotional strain to worries about risk and safety, families often shoulder hidden pressures. Supporting them is not only the right thing to do - it’s a strategic investment in workforce resilience.

Enhanced practice means going beyond basic communication. It means actively recognising families as part of the wider policing community. Tools like the Oscar Kilo Family Hub offer reassurance, connection, and practical guidance. Family events, support during critical incidents, and creative engagement all help build a policing culture that supports those behind the badge.

This approach reflects the values of the Police Covenant - showing that wellbeing doesn’t stop at the station door.

Why it matters

Families are often the first source of emotional support - but they’re rarely part of formal wellbeing plans. When families feel informed, supported, and connected, they’re better placed to support officers and staff during challenging times. This helps reduce stress, promote recovery, and improve retention.

Forces that adopt family-inclusive practices are better able to manage communication during major incidents, offer reassurance in uncertainty, and build long-term trust with those who support their people behind the scenes.

We offer a suite of tools, networks, and ready-to-use materials to help forces embed meaningful family support into their local approach.
