What it is
Peer support is a vital part of a whole-system approach to wellbeing. It gives officers and staff the chance to access informal, trusted support from trained colleagues who understand the realities of the job. For many people, this can feel more approachable than formal or clinical routes - especially in the early stages of distress.
When delivered well, peer support can help prevent issues from escalating, reinforce a culture of care, and provide vital reassurance after difficult incidents. But to be effective, peer roles must be properly defined, well-supported, and backed by clear governance. Without structure and supervision, there’s a risk that peer supporters become overwhelmed or find themselves operating without boundaries.
Why it matters
Policing is a high-pressure job. Stigma, isolation, or fear of judgement can stop people from speaking up when they’re struggling. Peer support helps close that gap. It offers safe, accessible conversations with someone who simply “gets it.”
But peer support is not a replacement for professional care. Forces must make sure their programmes are professionally managed, with strong oversight, escalation routes, and data capture to understand impact. Done well, peer support sends a powerful message: wellbeing is everyone’s business—not just the responsibility of HR, Occupational Health, or clinical teams.
