What it is
Supporting officers and staff as they leave policing - whether through retirement, resignation, or medical grounds - is a vital part of the wellbeing lifecycle, but it’s often overlooked. Transitioning out of the service can be a time of uncertainty, particularly when the departure follows trauma, injury, or ill-health.
Enhanced practice in this area means recognising that care doesn’t stop on a person’s last day. Forces can provide a structured, compassionate exit process that includes wellbeing screening, practical planning, and access to wider support. This may include national pre-retirement resources, tailored support for those leaving on medical grounds, or initiatives like alumni networks to maintain connection and belonging.
By strengthening support at this key moment, forces can demonstrate a meaningful commitment to 'leaving well' - reinforcing long-term trust and protecting the professional reputation of the service.
Why it matters
Leaving policing can bring real challenges: a loss of role identity, reduced social connection, financial worries, and uncertainty about the future. For some, this period can trigger mental health issues or increase feelings of isolation — especially when the exit was sudden or health-related.
Providing enhanced support helps reduce those risks. It shows individuals that their service is recognised and that support doesn’t stop when they walk out the door. It also helps prevent unresolved wellbeing needs from emerging later and reflects positively on the organisation as a caring, responsible employer.
The National Police Wellbeing Service (NPWS) offers a wide range of tools to help forces build effective leaver pathways - from financial guidance and wellbeing resources to exit screening and lived experience materials. NPWS practitioners are also available to support forces in shaping their local approach.
